Sunday Jul 31, 2022
This week at Breezy Breakfast, we are proud to offer a podcast highlighting Black culture in Guelph and Wellington County. Denise Frances and Kween from the Guelph Black Heritage Society (GBHS) are our guests.
While teaching us the history of people like James Kelso, the Jewell Family, Richard Pierpont, and the Stricklands, Kween and Denise provide a vivid story of Black settlers and their significant roles in the history of Wellington County.
Denise and Kween also talk about the GBHS annual Emancipation Day Celebration. They describe why Emancipation Day is celebrated, the significance of the Pan-African Flag, and why it is important to “Free Our Ancestors”.
Should Black History be highlighted for just one month?
Do we need to broaden our horizons?
Is Guelph a truly multicultural city?
Let’s listen to Kween and Denise as they answer questions asked by the folks at Breezy Breakfast.
