Episode 101: UPDATES - COVID and Indigenous Land & Water
Saturday Sep 10, 2022
Saturday Sep 10, 2022
Welcome back to the Breezy Breakfast Community Broadcast.
We begin another broadcast year with two updates featuring Danny Williamson, Layla Staats, and Skyler Williams.
Danny Williamson, of Wellington/Dufferin/Guelph Public Health, updates us on all things COVID: masks, social distancing, vaccines, school preparedness, and risk levels. These issues and many more will challenge our collective will to live during the short and dark days of winter.
Layla Staats and Skyler Williams update us on local Indigenous issues: water on reserves and the Land Back movement.
Layla inspires us when she talks about water. Rather than taking it for granted, we would do well to consider water as an entity, as a part of our family. Indeed, there is no life without clean water.
Layla is in the process of making a film about water; she is investigating the issue of water quality on reserves in Canada and in reservations in the United States.
Skyler gives us an update on 1492 Land Back Lane and the continued challenges facing First Nations as they confront the attitudes and the legal foundations of setter land acquisition and hegemony. Skyler points out that while indigenous land is shrinking, the out-of-control growth of settler communities devours the most precious of finite resources: land and water.
