Episode 127: History of May Day in Guelph
Monday May 08, 2023
Monday May 08, 2023
May 1st is International Worker's Day, a day to honour the activists who fight for proper working conditions, not the least of which being an 8-hour work day and a 5-day work week.
This week, we are joined by two special LOCAL guests.
Guelph historian Bonnie Durtnall brings us back to the 1900s, describing the colourful characters of Guelph's past and the working conditions in Guelph Industries.
We learn about who fought to better the lot of the tired, the poor, and the huddled masses, yearning to breathe free.
Brian Holstein regales us with tales of work and play in the time before radio.
Our May Day could not be complete without celebrating prohibition, bootleggers, gangsters, and illegal stills.
Nor could we forget Guelph’s incredible baseball history. Many do not know that Guelph won the world championship against a team from Ithaca, New York. According to Brian, there is a special reason to revel in this victory!
Remember: if you live in it, if you wear it, if you eat it, there’s a very good chance that a worker made it.

Sunday Apr 30, 2023
Sunday Apr 30, 2023
Guelph has its 200th birthday on April 23, 2027.
Many residents are eager to make this bicentennial the best party ever.
This week on Breezy breakfast we are joined by Danna Evans, General Manager of Culture and Recreation. Many ideas are offered – everything from a bridge honouring a former City Councillor to a list of 200 things of which Guelph should be proud.
This is also the first hybrid Breezy Breakfast, and we are proud to say it was a success.
Everything - the breakfast served by our favourite waitress Bev at the Rise and Shine restaurant, the usual suspects, the discussion, the sound quality - was top drawer.

Episode 123: Financial Fallout of Bill 23
Monday Apr 03, 2023
Monday Apr 03, 2023
March is going out like a lion which is appropriate for the topic today: Bill 23.
When Bill 23 roared through Ontario last fall, many questions were raised by supporters of municipal democracy, those concerned about urban sprawl, and others who feared it was now open season on urban development and profiteering.
The "More Homes Built Faster" Act purports to increase the number of affordable housing units; however, the definition of affordable is no longer related to income but rather to market value. In fact, there is nothing in Bill 23 that actually promotes affordable and supportive housing.
Bill 23 decreases Development, Community Benefit, and Parkland Dedication charges. This loss of revenue will lead to higher property taxes as cash-strapped municipalities must now pay for the infrastructure, parkland, and neighbourhood amenities that were once the responsibility of developers.
City Staff everywhere are scrambling to make changes that conform to Bill 23 regulations.
Municipalities have been forced to sign housing "pledges" to indicate their commitment to massive increases in housing stock by 2031.
Furthermore, there is great debate over whether Ontario actually needs 1.5 million units of housing by 2031.
Today, we are joined by three City staff members:
Jayne Holmes, Deputy Chief Administrative Officer of Infrastructure, Development and Enterprise Services
Tara Baker, Treasurer and General Manager of Finance
Krista Walkey, General Manager of Planning and Building Services.
They offer their perspectives on Bill 23 and respond to the many thoughtful questions posed by listeners.
We are also joined by Councillors Erin Caton and Phil Allt who provide a political lens on what is clearly the most controversial legislation affecting municipalities in Ontario in over 50 years.
