Episode 107: Nuclear Energy and Net Zero
Sunday Nov 20, 2022
Sunday Nov 20, 2022
According to a 2020 estimate from the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration, four percent of climate change-caused sea-level rise so far came from Thwaites alone, and a sudden total collapse would raise sea levels 25 inches more.
In the Arctic, global warming has affected the number and vitality of polar bears.
Clearly, we need to address carbon dioxide (and methane) emissions yesterday.
In Ontario, nuclear power provides upwards of 60% of our energy needs. Today, we discuss the role of nuclear energy in getting to net zero by 2050.
Our guests:
Jean-Claude Stranart, Engineer at Candu Energy Inc.,
Evan Ferrari, Executive Director of eMERGE,
Dr. Goretty Dias, Professor at the University of Waterloo's School of Environment, Enterprise, and Development.
All three guests agree on the importance of improving energy efficiency and changing our energy use habits. How much energy do we REALLY need?
Get ready for a powerful and energetic discussion.
